Frequently Asked Questions about the Java Chat Client

The client changed from what I was used to before! Why?

You may have noticed that we are no longer using Mibbit as our chat client. This is due to a contract agreement that Mibbit has with DALnet. This contract states that there is a limit in how many Mibbit users can be on DALnet at one time. We don't know the exact details of said contract, but we have had problems where users could not connect to DALnet because there were too many Mibbit users already connected. Because we were not the only group that had a Mibbit client connecting their web pages to their DALnet channel, and DALnet doesn't recognize different web clients as being anything other than a Mibbit client. This is why we changed to the Open Source Software CoolSmile Java IRC Client.

I don't like the color scheme or font style/size that's available. Is there any way to change it?

Yes there is! If you click on the options button a pop-up window (Make sure you are not using a pop-up blocker!) will come up where you can set your preferences. You can change the window color of the client your font style/size here along with several other options.

Why can't I get the options or help dialog to come up?

You are most likely using pop-up blocking software. If you are clicking on the button and nothing is happening, you will have to disable your popup blocker for the chat page and reload the page. If you are currently connected to a server this action will disconnect you and reconnect you once the applet re-loads.

Am I just locked into the #Otherbeings channel with this client?

No. You can go into any other channel on the DALnet network simply by typing
/join #[channelnamehere]
